Hot Suppa! Hot Damn!

Hot Suppa is a Congress Street gem, serving breakfast and lunch 7 days a week and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Locals know to get here early or expect to wait on weekends, but try this place mid-week and you can often be seated right away. Look at the menus and you will see updated traditional diner food with a touch of southern flair. Good stuff!
On this particular visit I had grits with black bean chili, cheddar, poached eggs, and warm perfect puffy tortilla chips. So creamy/crunchy/rich/good! I also love that they not only make good coffee, but also have giant pitchers of cream for the table. This makes me happy, happy!

Harvest on the Stage

Kicking off the week of Harvest on the Harbor was an amazing evening of food and wine pairings by some of Maine’s top chefs. With 7 courses it was too much to go over each dish, but some of the standouts were: Cara Stadler of Bao Bao Dumpling House‘s beef tartar was filled with Asian inspired flavors, the foie torchon from Lee Harding Smith’s Oyster Room was my favorite savory dish of the night, David Turin of Opus Ten‘s margret duck and chicken boudin renewed my faith in humanity, and Shanon Bard of Zapoteca’s‘s chile dusted venison was oh so tasty. These dishes plus the others, combined with wonderful wine pairings by Erica Archer’s Wine Wise Events made me Happy, Happy! So many great flavors and textures! Topping it all of was the most deliciously unique desert by Ilma Lopez of Picolo. Her incorporation of root vegetables into desert lead to a beautiful mouth-watering finish! A special thank you to the folks at Coffee By Design for generously matching all funds raised to support The Good Shepard Food Bank.

Timber-It’s where I go to eat meat!

Timber Steakhouse & Rotisserie is the place to go in Portland if you like to eat meat. Feel like a steak, on our first visit my wife and I shared a 24 Oz dry aged ribeye that was fantastic. Bigger than my head yet so tender and flavorful. We left in a meat haze and still had left-overs!

On our latest visit we were drawn in by their new Wednesday and Sunday nigh offering of prime rib. Seeing this once ubiquitous cut of meat on Timber’s menu made me very happy as it had become virtually extinct in the area. Oh so tender and so, so meaty! At $29 it is not inexpensive but this huge slab of meat served with super-creamy mashed potatoes and tarragon sliced carrots, represents the best of Americana and should not be missed.
They also have a huge whisky selection.
